POTSDAM

Another UNESCO World Heritage Site ticked ✔,  POTSDAM.
A city on the border of Berlin, Germany and is best known for the magnificent palaces and parks that date back to its time as the former royal seat of Prussia.

Via the main train station of Berlin, it takes only half an hour to arrive at the train station in Potsdam.
A good starting point for a walk through the historical centre of Potsdam is Alter Markt Square. The church of St. Nicholas, Lustgarten park, the Old Town Hall and the Stadtschloss palace. Opposite Alter Markt, tucked away behind a row of houses, lies Neuer Markt square. Dating from the 17th and 18th century, this is one of the best-preserved baroque squares in Europe and arguably the most beatuiful square in the city.

The highlight of our day trip in Potsdam is the Sanssouci Palace and a walk through the beautiful park area with its fountains, Chinese tea and dragon houses, and other follies.

Potsdam offers a breathtaking panorama of culture and history.

Then we head back to the old city centre of Potsdam with its romantic Dutch Quarter. There are nice cafes, boutiques for shopping and a market where you can taste regional specialties as well.

To the north of Bassinplatz lies the famous Dutch Quarter, the Hollandisches Viertel, with 134 lovely red brick houses graced by shuttered windows, gables and white trim. The community is the largest collection of Dutch-style homes outside Netherlands, built between 1737 and 1742 by Dutch craftsmen.

Brandeburg Gate
This is a smaller version of the one in Berlin.

Our visit in Potsdam wouldn't be complete without trying a traditional German food.
I had Schweinshaxe auf Sauerkraut dazu Salzkartoffeln (Roast Pork with potatoes).

It was my hubby's birthday as well and here he is enjoying a German beer.

Potsdam is now one of my favourite cities in Germany. This picturesque town is a welcome escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. The historic architecture and abundance of greenery are pleasant reasons enough to visit, but it's the Sanssouci, Dutch Quarter, Schloss Cecilienhof, Alexandrowka and St. Nicholas Church that keep visitors coming back.
