ZAANSE SCHANS

Hopped aboard a bus from central Amsterdam and settled in for the scenic journey out of the city
to the Dutch countryside. En route to several North Holland Villages.
Our First stop is Zaanse Schans.
The Windmill Village is a pretty town on the Zaan River
and a popular destination due to its well-preserved windmills.
The village gives an excellent picture of Zaan district in the 17th and 18th centuries.

We immediately noticed how large the windmills of Zaanse Schans are. The first five are the  most noticeable as we get closer. The Young Sheep, The Cat, The Seeker, The Houseman and The Crowned Poelenburg. Each windmill serves a specific purpose. Like for instance, De Kat or The Cat is actually a paint mill. Its main purpose is to convert raw materials into pigments. The other windmills are also exceptionally unique. De Huisman has been used to make tobacco and as a saw mill. Today, it is used in mustard production.
One of my most memorable part of this trip is to visit a local shoemaker and admire the art of carving and painting the wooden clogs the Netherlands is known for...
And of course an occasional local wearing traditional Dutch dress.
Zaanse Schans was at one time the original site for industry in the entire world. The windmills provided natural energy for the production of oil, paint, tobacco and other products.
The Zaanse Schans is indeed a lovely picturesque village. Wander through the town and take in the views, then visit the windmills that interest you. It is open all year, is free of charge and can be experienced and appreciated by the whole family. Come see what life was like in the 17th and 18th centuries and explore these windmills near Amsterdam.

Bedankt voor de herinneringen Netherlands! 💋
